IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University designated player
Marlisa Berrelleza on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference Softball Freshman of the Week.
The Indio, Calif., native hit .363 (4-for-11) with two homers, four RBI and two runs in in seven games between March 4 to 10.
The 5-10 rookie did most of her damage against Dominican this past weekend. In Friday's second game against the Penguins, she was summoned as a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning and crushed a solo homer to right for a big insurance run in the Silverswords' 5-1 win.
Then in Saturday's first game, she hit a solo shot in the fifth which tied the game at 1. In the seventh, she added an RBI sacrifice fly although Chaminade's rally fell short.
Berrelleza leads the team in batting (.407) and slugging percentage (.741) which are also both tied for the lead in the PacWest. Her three homers and eight RBI are second on the squad.
Biola's Kayla Neff and Paige Austin were named the PacWest Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.
The 10-11 Silverswords, who have already equaled last year's overall win total, embark on a 15-day, 17-game road trip starting Tuesday at Azusa Pacific.
