LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Chaminade University men's golf team on Monday opened the Pacific West Conference Championships with a 308 at the par-72 Wigwam Resort Gold Golf Course.
The Silverswords are seventh of the eight-team field and are just 12 shots behind first-round leader Dominican.
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i-Manoa/Moanalua HS) and
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) both fired opening-round 2-over-par 74s. They are tied for 10th, just four shots behind co-leaders Caleb Keohokapu (Notre Dame de Namur) and Nick Rivera (Dominican). Gunderson had 14 pars in the round, including his final five holes, tied for second-most among the field.
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) and
Patrick Tran (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Capistrano Connections Academy) both carded 8-over 80s in their opening rounds while
Curtis Coburn (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) shot a 106.
