LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – The Chaminade University men's golf team shot a 308 in Tuesday's second round of the Pacific West Conference Championships at the par-72 Wigwam Gold Golf Course.
The Silverswords dropped a spot to eighth in the team standings with a two-day total of 617, changing places with Biola, trailing the Eagles by seven shots with one round remaining.
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/University of Hawai'i-Manoa/Moanalua HS) is in contention for the individual title after firing a career-best round with a 2-under-par 70 to put him in a tie for third overall at even-par, just two shots behind leader Nick Rivera of Dominican. The University of Hawai'i-Manoa transfer had four birdies Tuesday including three during his bogey-free back-nine.
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) shot a 7-over 79 but remains the 'Swords' No. 2 scorer at 9-over 153 in a tie for 22nd.
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) rebounded after a disappointing first round to post a 3-over 75, putting him at 11-over.
Patrick Tran (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif./Capistrano Connections Academy) shot an 85, giving him a total of 165 while
Curtis Coburn (Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach) recorded a 108 for a total of 214.
The final round of the PacWest Championships will get underway at 7 a.m. local time. Mello will tee off at 7:40 a.m. as he looks to become the first Silversword to capture a conference title.
