AIEA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – It appears that the Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University men's golf teams are so evenly matched, their second dual match in as many days did not settle local Division II island bragging rights.
The Silverswords and Sharks dueled to matching 311 team scores Tuesday at the par-72, 6,787-yard Pearl Country Club, a day after both teams played to a 314 draw at the same course.
The good news for the Silverswords was for the second straight day, a Chaminade golfer – more-so two golfers – claimed individual medalist honors.
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) and
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Manoa/Moanalua HS) both shot 4-over-par 76 to tie for first-place honors.
Nishimoto's co-medalist finish was the second of his career to become just the third Silversword in school history with multiple tournament wins, joining Jarin Harada and J.T. Trevathan on the list.
For Mello, it was his first career medalist finish. His 76 was just one off his career-low of 75 set in April 2019.
The duo finished one shot ahead of HPU teammates Ray Kim and Ryan Torres.
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) tied for fifth with a 6-over 78 while
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei), who won Monday's restart opener, posted an 81.
Kalani Frazier (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei), playing as a non-scoring individual, shot an 87 followed by
Gavin Bedoya (Honolulu/Kaiser) with an 89.
