Every Monday, GoSwords.com will publish "This Week in 'Swords History presented by Big City Diner" which looks back at significant events and some of the memorable games that helped shape Chaminade University Athletics into what it is today.
November 7, 1990: Volleyball Outlasts D-I Cal State Fullerton
1990 was one of the most interesting years in the history of Chaminade University women's volleyball. The program was in its second year as an NCAA Division II program and, after being boycotted from the 1989 season by its former NAIA District 29 foes, got its rivalries with BYU-Hawai'i, Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific back.
The Silverswords managed a few big upsets that season including two over HPU (ranked No.4 and No. 1 at the time) earlier in the year while also playing three Division I programs (UC Santa Barbara, CSUN, San Jose State).
But an October swoon saw the 'Swords' to fall to 10-17 heading into their home finale against their final D-I opponent of the year in Cal State Fullerton on Nov. 7 at McCabe Gym.
After an auspicious start to the match, Chaminade roared back to defeat the Titans on Senior Night, 2-15, 15-12, 12-15, 15-9, 15-11.
The 'Swords put down a school-record 95 kills in the win led by
Terri Bertulfo's match-high 29.
Julie Edwards contributed with 26 kill along with 16 digs while
Pat Poore added another 19 kills.
