AIEA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University men's golf teams faced off Monday, participating in the first athletic event for both schools in the 2020-21 academic year.
In the first of two dual matches this week at the par-72, 6,787-yard Pearl Country Club, the Silverswords and Sharks both shot 314 to end in a draw amid cloudy and, at times, rainy conditions.
Sophomore
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) fired a career-best 1-over-par 73, one shot better than HPU's Keli'i Dudoit, to earn medalist honors. Peterson birdied the par-5 17th to overtake Dudoit on the leaderboard then parred the 18th to earn his first career win.
The match was the first NCAA Division II sporting event in Hawai'i since the COVID-19 pandemic halted all intercollegiate competition in mid-March.
The 'Swords returned all five team members from last season including a trio of seniors –
Gavin Bedoya (Honolulu/Kaiser),
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Manoa/Moanalua HS) and
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) – who are taking advantage of the NCAA's season-of-competition waiver for a fifth year.
Nishimoto shot a 5-over 75 to finish in a tie for third with the Shark's Ray Kim.
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) shot an 80 followed by Mello (84) and Bedoya (86).
Kalani Frazier (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei) shot a 95 playing as an individual (score did not count for the team score).
The two teams will have a rematch at the same course Tuesday in another 18-hole contest. The first group tees off at approximately 11:02 a.m.
