HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's and women's basketball teams will make their long-awaited 2020-21 debut late next month with 12-game schedules featuring all in-state opponents.
The Silverswords will open on Friday, Jan. 22 when they visit Hawai'i Pacific University at The Shark Tank followed by rematches at the same venue the following day on Jan. 23.
In agreement with Pacific West Conference members in Hawai'i, teams will be restricted to in-pod play in an effort to reduce travel to other regions. The conference pods are Hawai'i (Chaminade, Hawai'i Hilo, Hawai'i Pacific), Northern California (Academy of Art, Dominican, Fresno Pacific, Holy Names) and Southern California (Azusa Pacific, Biola, Concordia, Point Loma).
Under the new conference schedule for this season, teams will play at a single venue on consecutive days.
The 'Swords make their McCabe Gymnasium debut on Friday, Jan. 29 against UH Hilo.The backend of the two-game series between the 'Swords and Vulcans will be on Saturday, Jan. 30.
Chaminade then hosts the Sharks on Friday, Feb. 12, and Saturday, Feb. 13. The teams then travel to Hilo on Feb. 18 and 19 then have another road series at HPU on March 1 and 3. The Silverswords finish the regular season with consecutive home games against UH Hilo on March 6 and 7.
Postseason opportunity is still available in basketball, although the NCAA has reduced the number of participants for the NCAA Division II Regionals to 48 teams instead of the usual 64 for both men's and women's tournaments.
Tipoff times will be announced at a future date and fans will not be allowed in McCabe Gym this season. Also, due to the nature of the pandemic, dates are subject to change.
