IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University men's basketball players
Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) and
Isaac Amaral-Artharee (Portland, Ore./Central Catholic) are the Pacific West Conference Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, for games played from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2.
Cartaino, who also earned player of the week kudos last week, totaled 58 points, nine rebounds, five assists, five steals and two blocks to help guide the Silverswords to an undefeated week. He also made 25-of-35 shots from the floor for a 57.1 field goal percentage.
The 6-foot-6 redshirt senior began the week with a 32-point outburst in last Monday's win over Academy of Art then had 26 more in Sunday's victory at Hawai'i Hilo, going 11-of-15 from the field.
Cartaino is the PacWest's leading scorer at 21.5 points per game and is shooting at a 56.5 percent clip which is fourth in the conference.
It is Cartaino's third career player of the week award, all coming this season.
Amaral-Artharee totaled 25 points and capped his week by tying his career high of 18 points Sunday against the Vulcans. The redshirt freshman made 4-of-7 field goals and hit all eight of his free throw tries.
The 6-foot-2 guard increased his scoring average to a season-high 8.6 per game and has 30 3-pointers this season, second on the squad. He is also 25-of-27 from the free throw line (92.6 percent).
It is Amaral-Artharee's third freshman of the week honor.
PacWest Defender of the Week honors went to Azusa Pacific's Selom Mawugbe who ranks second in the nation in blocked shots.
The 'Swords, who are ranked eighth in this week's D2SIDA West Region Media Poll, are 13-7 overall and are third in the PacWest standings at 11-4. They embark on a critical five-game road swing against four of the conference's top teams starting Saturday when they face Mawugbe and the ninth-ranked Cougars in Azusa, Calif. Chaminade won the first meeting, 96-85, in Honolulu on Dec. 4.
