Cartaino Named PacWest Men’s Basketball Scholar-Athlete

IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University men's basketball wing Tyler Cartaino on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
 
The senior from Newbury Park, Calif., earned the award for the second straight year. He is one of 15 student-athletes voted by PacWest sports information directors as the Scholar-Athletes of the Year in their respective sports the conference sponsors.
 
On the court, Cartaino led the PacWest in scoring at 20.8 points per game, the first Silversword to end the season as the conference's scoring champ since 2007. He also finished tied for fourth in the PacWest in shooting percentage (55.6 percent) and with 1,150 career points, ranks 14th in the program's career scoring list.
 
In the classroom, Cartaino has a cumulative grade-point average of 3.795. He spent this past year as a graduate student after earning his Bachelor's degree in Accounting in May 2019.
 
He is now eligible for the PacWest's overall Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, an award he also won last summer. It, as well as the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year, will be announced on Wednesday, June 24.
 
It is the latest accolade earned by Cartaino who has nearly a dozen conference, regional and national awards both academically and athletically. It includes CoSIDA Academic All-America and Academic All-District honors, all-region awards by the D2CCA and NABC and PacWest honors for both on-court performance (two first-team selections) and academics (three Scholar-Athlete of the Year).
