HONOLULU – Chaminade University women's volleyball head coach
Kahala Kabalis Hoke announced Monday the 10 members of the 2020 recruiting class, the largest of her head coaching tenure.
Brooklyn Casey
Brooklyn Casey, from Liberty High School in Peoria, Ariz., is a 5-foot-11 right-side hitter who earned Class 6A all-district first team and 6A All-Desert Valley Region First Team honors. Casey helped her club team, Livewire 18 Adidas, win two national championships in two different divisions.
Alyssa Grodell
Alyssa Grodell is a three-year starter at Valencia High School in Valencia, Calif. She played three different positions at Valencia, starting at middle blocker in her sophomore year, earning all-league second team honors. During Grodell's junior year, she moved to opposite then earned first team all-league honors after switching to outside hitter for her senior season. Her club team was the Legacy 18s.
Lizzie Hall
Lizzie Hall is a 6-2 middle blocker from Basha High School in Gilbert, Ariz. Hall helped Basha capture the Arizona state 6A class championship this past season, rallying from a 0-2 deficit to rival and No. 1-seeded Perry High in the state title match. Hall played club volleyball with the Arizona East Valley Juniors.
Kyra McCain
Kyra McCain is a middle blocker from Hamilton High School, a volleyball power in Chandler, Ariz. A three-year starter, McCain helped Hamilton to 6A state playoffs in each of her three years on the varsity squad and was one of the state's top blockers with 128 total blocks along with 141 kills as a senior. Her club team is the Arizona Club One Platinum 18s.
Allure Padilla
Allure Padilla is a two-time all-conference honoree at Faith Christian High School in Arvada, Colo. She earned second team all-conference honors as a sophomore and was voted to the first team as a junior. Padilla started all four years for the varsity team and was captain her final two. She is also the school's all-time leader in service aces with 232. Her club team is The Diff 18s.
Kaybrie Pe'a
Kaybrie Pe'a is a 5-11 outside hitter from Bountiful, Utah, and is a transfer from Division I Youngstown State. She sat out the 2018 season on a medical hardship but helped Bountiful High School win four consecutive regional titles and two state championships (2015, '16) along with a state runner-up finish in 2017. She was named Class 5A All-State Second Team by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. She will have four years of eligibility for the 'Swords.
Brooklen Pe'a
Brooklen Pe'a is the twin sister of Kaybrie and, like her sister, is transferring to Chaminade after spending the last two years at Youngstown State. As a sophomore this past 2019 season, Brooklen Pe'a led the Penguins in kills per set (2.90), the most by a YSU hitter in five years. She was also second on the team in service aces per set at 0.28 and third in total aces with 28. At Bountiful High, she earned first team all-state honors by the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News.
Kendall Rios
Kendall Rios is a 5-11 outside hitter from Foothill High School in Santa Ana, Calif. She helped guide Foothill to the No. 2 seed of the California Interscholastic Federation State Southern California Regional Division I playoffs. Rios competed in club volleyball with Apex 18s.
Kianna Swingle
Kianna Swingle is from Ironwood Ridge High School in Oro Valley, Ariz., and helped them win three Southern Regional titles. As the Nighthawks' starting setter, Swingle led the Southern Region with 610 assists while her team hit .410 on the year. Her 1,168 assists are also a school record. Her club team was Club Cactus 18s.
Elli Tsukano
Elli Tsukano is a setter and defensive specialist from James Bowie High School in Austin, Texas. A three-year starter, she helped the Bulldogs reach the Division 6A playoffs all four years while earning all-district and academic all-district honors in her final three seasons. Tsukano's club team was Austin Juniors 18s Elite.
"This is our biggest recruiting class in my time here and I feel confident these young ladies will help our competitive culture thrive," Kabalis Hoke said. "I'm excited about the talent and high club level experience that will be joining our squad and additionally thrilled to know we are adding outstanding young ladies. Their attitudes and behavior align directly with our goals for the program and their post-college lives."
The Silverswords lost five seniors from a class that posted a 45-14 record the past two years including outside hitters
Emma Tecklenburg (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior), who finished second in career kills, and
Alana Handy (Burlington, Wash./Bethune-Cookman Univ./Burlington-Edison), and setter
Natashya Enos (Kahalu'u, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Saint Francis HS) who ranks among the school's career leaders in assists and service aces. The 'Swords also lost defensive specialists
Isabella Tessitore (San Diego/Torrey Pines) and
Nina Torio (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani).
