Hailey Matsumura of softball. The two-time Academic All-Pacific West Conference honoree has been the Silverswords' starting shortstop since the beginning of her freshman season in 2019, making 59 consecutive starts. She was leading the team in runs scored when the season was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Q (GS.com): What are you missing the most about Chaminade?
A (ES): I am definitely missing hanging out with my friends during school and going to get dinner before practice with my teammates.
Q: What are you doing to keep your spirits up during the situation?
A: I've been going to my grandparents' house to do some gardening, hanging out with my sister and going out to the driving range with some of my friends.
Q: How are you staying connected with your coaches and teammates?
A: I've been keeping in touch with my coach by phone calls and texts. My teammates and I keep in touch by social media.
Q: Have you learned any new skills or picked up new hobbies that you otherwise would not have if not for the current situation?
A: New hobbies I picked up are gardening and building 3-D puzzles.
Q: What is your favorite on-the-field or on-court memory from this past 2019-20 year?
A: Although the season was cut very short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, my favorite memory is beating Biola, 2-1, in a bases-loaded walk-off in the seventh inning.
Q: What is the first thing you will do after we return to a sense of "normalcy?"
A: Truthfully, I will probably be doing the same things that I have been doing.
