AIEA, O'ahu, Hawai'i – Back in the fall, the Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University men's golf teams played two dual matches. Both resulted in draws.
So when the two teams faced each other for a third time on Wednesday – this time in the spring championship season – the Silverswords showed the third time was the charm.
The 'Swords had three of the top five scores to defeat the Sharks by a 313-317 count at the par-72, 6,787-yard Pearl Country Club, the team's championship season opener.
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) carded a team-low 2-over-par 74 for Chaminade while
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) fired a season-low 4-over 76.
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i/Moanalua HS) finished with an 80, followed by
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) with an 83.
Kalani Frazier (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei) shot a 91 while newcomer
Jackson Tyler (La Plata, Md./Montverde Academy, Fla.) played as an individual with a 98.
HPU's Keli'i Dudoit was the individual winner with a 2-under 70.
The Silverswords head to Northern California for a pair tournaments. They will open on March 7 in the Northwest Nazarene Invitational.
