HONOLULU – Chaminade University forward
Randi Fontes (Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i/Pearl City HS) continues to make her way up the Chaminade University women's soccer team's record books.
On Saturday, she scored twice to move into a second-place tie in the team's all-time goals list but it was the University of Hawai'i Hilo's Nanea Wall who helped spoil the occasion.
Wall fired a 30-foot shot which barely cleared the crossbar with just under 90 seconds left to play to take victory away from the Silverswords albeit it ended in a 2-2 draw.
Fontes, who has accounted for three of the 'Swords' four goals in this truncated 2021 spring season, scored her 10th and 11th career goals, tying her with
Twyla Hamasaki (2012-15) for second on the all-time list. Caitlin Tatemichi (2015-18) is the team's all-time career leader in goals with 15. It was also Fontes' second career multi-goal match.
The 'Swords opened with a bang. With a minute gone, Fontes stepped in front a UH Hilo defender, and fired a 29-footer past charging goalkeeper Viviana Poli. At 1 minute, 6 seconds, the goal was the second-fastest in program history, just 14 second off the mark set by Nicole Nishiki in November 2017 which also was against UH Hilo.
However the Vulcans (0-0-1) responded with the tying goal in the 28th minute which it remained at intermission.
With the gusty winds throughout the match, it remained knotted at 1 until the 86th minute when Fontes was taken down inside the UH Hilo box. The senior calmly fired the penalty kick to give the 'Swords the 2-1 advantage.
However the Vulcans countered just two minutes later when Wall gathered in an errant ball just beyond right-center of the box from 30-feet out and fired a perfect strike above the outstretched arms of CUH keeper
Naomi Takata (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City). The ball just missed the crossbar by less than a foot, knotting the score at 2.
Because of a coaches' arrangement earlier in the week, it was agreed that the game would end at the conclusion of regulation with no overtime in addition to unlimited substitutions.
Fontes took five the Chaminade's eight shot attempts.
Michele Bonifacio (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei),
Sharon Cain (Honolulu/Kamehameha-Kapalama) and
Hoku Schatz (Hau'ula, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Idaho/Kahuku HS) each took one.
Takata made seven stops while Poli had one for UH Hilo.
The Silverswords are back in action on Sunday, March 7 when they host Hawai'i Pacific University at Saint Louis Field.
