WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's golf team opened the 2021 Pacific West Conference Golf Championships Monday in sixth with a 323 at the par-70, 6,566-yard Waikoloa Beach Course.
The Silverswords trail fifth-place Dominican University of California by 16 shots. The University of Hawai'i Hilo and Holy Names are the first round co-leaders at 286.
Kalani Frazier (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei) has the 'Swords' first-round low score, carding a 5-over-par 75, tied for 15th-place overall. Staring at the par-4 11th, Frazier was at 5-over through his first eight holes but recovered in the course's front-nine, recording two birdies to finish at even-par in the final 10.
The sophomore is just six shots off the lead behind tri-leaders Dustin Franco of UH Hilo and Keita Okada and Ray Kim of Hawai'i Pacific University.
Schuyler Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif./Mater Dei) and
Jeren Nishimoto (Honolulu/Kaiser) are both at 81, tied for 25th while
Desmond Mello (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Hawai'i/Moanalua HS) shot an 86 and
Colby Gunderson (Kaneohe, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Castle) is at 88.
The second round of the championships tees off at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
