HONOLULU – Ever wondered about how the Chaminade University women's volleyball team fared during their early years in the NAIA? Which players are ranked in the career top 10 in kills? Or what the all-time series record against Hawai'i Pacific University is?
Those questions can now be answered.
For the first time in a quarter-century, a record book for the volleyball team is finalized and available on GoSwords.com, the official website of Chaminade Athletics. The last time records were maintained was a Chaminade volleyball media guide published in 1995. The Volleyball History and Record Book page can be found on the menu of the volleyball home page.
The assembling of the volleyball record book was a project some six years in the making. There were existing bits and pieces of information scattered throughout NCAA and Pacific West Conference archives but virtually nothing during the program's early years in the NAIA and a NCAA Division II independent in the early 1990s.
Conducting research in archives from the Honolulu Advertiser and Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspapers helped shape the first decade of Chaminade volleyball which began in 1984.
Unfortunately, most of the season statistics in the 1980s through 1993 and the 2000 and 2001 seasons have been lost through the passage of time. Most of the box scores prior to 2006 are also gone.
(Note: Any information that can help add to the record book is welcome by contacting the Chaminade Sports Information Office; documentation is required for the information to be added.)
"Volleyball remains extremely popular in Hawai'i and Chaminade has a rich and interesting history as the second-longest tenured team sport at the university," said sports information director
Kevin Hashiro who began extensive research to update the record book in 2015. "The unfortunate situation of COVID-19 shutting down the fall season actually helped to accelerate this project in time for this upcoming fall 2021 season."
A similar project for softball, which began in 1988, is currently underway with an estimated completion date of summer 2023 or 2024.
Record books for the programs which began in 2006 (men's and women's soccer and women's basketball) are nearing completion and will be published shortly.
