Silverswords Cruise Past Saint Martin’s

HONOLULU – The beat goes on for the Chaminade University women's volleyball team at the Hawai'i Challenge.

The Silverswords got 13 kills from Brooklen Pe'a (Woods Cross, Utah/Youngstown State/Bountiful HS) and 12 and four blocks from Kyra McCain (Chandler, Ariz./Hamilton) to lead them to a 25-16, 27-25, 25-14 sweep over Saint Martin's Sunday at McCabe Gymnasium.

The 'Swords improved to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in the Challenge.

Tia Allen had a team-high nine kills for the Saints who fell to 5-3 overall and finished the Hawai'i Challenge with a 1-3 record.

Like they did on Saturday, the 'Swords rolled in the opening set, breaking open a close contest by going on a set-ending 7-1 run. Pe'a smashed down three kills during the run including three straight.

In the second set, the Saints showed they were more of the team that defeated Hawai'i Hilo as opposed to being the ones who lost to Cal State East Bay and in the subsequent rematch to the Vulcans.

Trailing 22-18, Saint Martin's scored five straight to take the lead, the first 20-point allowed by Chaminade during the Challenge. The 'Swords staved off one set point and Pe'a put down three straight points to end the set.

Down 6-4, Chaminade went on a 10-1 run with McCain accounting for three points and Alexia Byrnes (Chicago/Youngstown State/Saint Francis HS) two. Another CUH run – this time at 6-1 – finished off the Saints to send Chaminade to its third straight win.

Lataisia Saulala (Morgan Hills, Calif./Oakwood) finished with seven kills with two blocks. Marcelle Butler (Woodstock, Ga./Howard University/Sequoyah HS) and Annah Rivera (Granada Hills, Calif./Biship Alemany) each put down six kills.

Byrnes had 36 assists and 10 digs with Tate Lutu (Honolulu/Sacred Hearts) scooping up a team-high 11 digs.

The 'Swords hit .256 for the match while holding the Saints to .133 and totaled 48 kills to SMU's 31.

The Silverswords wrap up the Hawai'i Challenge later today against Montana State Billings at 4:30 p.m.
