IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University libero Anna Della Vecchia (Vicenza, Italy/University of San Francisco/IIS S.B. Boscardin HS) has been named the first Pacific West Conference Defender of the Week for fall 2021.
The senior transfer from the University of San Francisco totaled 186 digs and 16 service aces through the Silverswords' first eight matches of the season.
Dalla Vecchia posted 101 digs and 10 aces in the Hawai'i/Alaska Challenge in the final weekend of August then had 85 and six, respectively, in the Western Washington Invitational. She has seven 20-plus dig matches this season with her lowest total being 14 in a three-set sweep of Sonoma State this past Saturday and also has an ace in all but one match.
Dalla Vecchia is averaging 5.31 digs and 0.46 aces per set this season, both of which rank third in the PacWest. Her digs average is on pace to break the single-season school record of 4.85 set in 2002 by Kalae Araujo.
Biola's Madison Beebe was the conference's player of the year.
Chaminade returns home this weekend to host the Hawai'i Challenge at McCabe Gymnasium. The University of Hawai'i Hilo, Cal State East Bay, Montana State Billings and Saint Martin's round out the field. The 'Swords face MSUB on Saturday while the tournament gets underway Friday at noon with the Yellowjackets facing CSUEB. Due to City and County of Honolulu gathering orders, fans will not be allowed in McCabe but live streaming video of all 10 matches is free for all viewers.
