WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country teams had a rather memorable Saturday morning, competing in their own Chaminade Invitational at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.
The highlight was the effort of sophomore
Zoe McDonough (Fremont, Calif./Washington) who captured first-place honors in the women's race. McDonough completed the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 13.8 seconds, five seconds better than Hawai'i Pacific University's Karen Corona Perez.
Her result, as well as a sixth-place finish from
Anne Drelling (Orange County, Calif./Canyon) helped the Silversword women finish with 51 points, six better than the University of Hawai'i Hilo. HPU won the team title with 22 points.
According to available information, McDonough is the first Silversword women's runner to capture an individual cross country meet since Missy Mowat won the 5-k Hawai'i Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship on Oct. 24, 1991.
Caitlin Bocobo (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) was Chaminade's third runner to cross the tape at 23:27.2 while
Eri Leong (Las Vegas/SECTA) was a tick behind at 23:27.4.
Leila-Jayne Casison (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) finished at 24:02.0 followed by Monteserrat Lanfranco (Honolulu/Roosevelt) at 24:43.1 and
Ashley Yoshikawa (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) at 27:13.5.
In the men's race covering 7.288 kilometers,
Owen Daugherty (Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park) was the first 'Sword to cross the finish line, logging a time of 26:32.0, fifth place overall. Three other Chaminade runners enjoyed top-10 placements with
Peter Jan Ramos (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) in sixth at 26:39.6,
Ben Salinas (Highland, Ind./Western Colorado Univ./Highland HS) in eighth at 27:04.8 and
Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) in ninth at 27:08.1.
Other Silverswords who finished the course were
Conor McMahon (Pacific, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) in 33:35.9 and
Josiah Rodrigues (Honoka'a, Hawai'i/Honoka'a) in 37:08.2.
Chaminade finished with 40 points while HPU won the team title with 17. The Sharks' Justin Todd was the overall men's finisher at 24:32.3.
Both 'Swords teams are next in action at the UH Hilo Invitational in Hilo on Oct. 1.
