Softball Splits Final Day of Fall Preseason Classic

11/12/2023 9:26:00 PM

HONOLULU – The Chaminade University softball team completed their fall exhibition season Sunday by splitting their two games at the University of Hawai'i Fall Preseason Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

The Silverswords outslugged Fullerton College, 11-6, in the first game of the afternoon, then finished off the tournament with a 4-0 loss to host Hawai'i.

Taryn Fujioka (Aiea, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Pearl City) went a combined 3-for-7 at the plate while Keaolani Takemura-Brehme (Pearl City, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mid-Pacific Institute) drove in three to help Chaminade finish with a 2-3 mark in the tournament.

Bailey Jacobsen (Buena Park, Calif./Cypress), Fujioka and Takemura-Brehme each had four hits during the tournament. Three of Jacobsen's were for extra bases while also being the 'Swords' RBI leader with five.

The 'Swords' glove work also committed just three errors during the series.

The exhibitions helped the all three teams in the field to prepare for their spring championship segments, which for Chaminade and NCAA Division II, begins in the first weekend of February.

After spotting the Hornets two first-inning runs on a homer, the 'Swords loaded the bases in the top of the fourth where freshman Summer Buck (Honolulu/Kaiser) got them on the board with a run-scoring single. With the bases still juiced, Takemura-Brehme cleared them with a double to left to put Chaminade ahead, 4-2.

In the fifth, Larchelle Tuifao (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kapolei), Kailah Gates-Coyaso (Waianae, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waianae) and Chasity McKean (Kapolei, O'ahu, Hawai'i/College of Southern Nevada/Kapolei HS) all had RBIs to up their lead to 7-2.

Jacobsen would get her final extra base hit of the tournament in the sixth inning with an RBI double followed by a Kobe Brown's (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) groundout to plate another run.

The 'Swords added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a wild pitch and a Fullerton error.

The Hornets would score four times in the bottom of the inning but Bailey Benson (Cheney, Wash./Gonzaga Preparatory) struck out the game's final batter.

Benson tossed five innings in relief and did not allow a run until the seventh to get the win. Ashley Ogata (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Mililani) pitched the first two innings. Takemura-Brehme and Fujioka each had two hits.

UH 4, CUH 0
After scoring eight runs in their first two games against their Division I cousins, the 'Swords could not add to the total and was held to just three hits (Fujioka, Jacobsen and McKean).

Chaminade pitched by committee in the finale with Kamryn Lopez (Bakersfield, Calif./Garces Memorial) getting the start, working two innings before giving way to Benson who went another 3 1/3 frames, allowing just one run. Ogata faced two UH hitters in the bottom of the sixth, retiring them both. Lopez was charged with the loss.

The Silverswords, who will begin spring play in early February, will release their regular season schedule later this month.
