LA MIRADA, Calif. -- Longtime Chaminade University administrator Kevin Hashiro was named on July 18 the Pacific West Conference Sports Information Director of the Year via a vote by his peers.
Hashiro, who has been at Chaminade since 2013, accepted the award at the PacWest College Sports Communicators annual meeting Monday at Biola University in La MIrada.Â
"I am very honored to receive this recognition from my peers at the PacWest," Hashiro said. "It's very humbling to join the fellow sports communicator colleagues who have previously been recognized for this award.
"This is a collective effort thanks to my Chaminade co-workers for making my job a bit easier."
The Maui native is the primary media relations contact for Silversword athletics for all 10 of its teams (soon to 12 with the addition of baseball and beach volleyball). He maintains GoSwords.com, the official website for Chaminade Athletics. He also handles all statistical information and athletic social media sites as a one-man shop.
This year, he has helped oversee a redesign and launch of refreshed Chaminade University and Silversword logos and brands. He was the on-site media coordinator for the 2022-23 Pacific West Conference Basketball Championship Tournaments at McCabe Gymnasium.
"I have worked with Kevin for a long time and have always admired his work ethic and knowledge of all things pertaining to sports information," said PacWest Sports Communications Director Russ Blunck. "More importantly, he is always patient and kind in the face of a athletic world that comes at you pretty fast and furious."
Prior to working at Chaminade, Hashiro served in the athletic department of his alma mater at the University of Hawai`i and also in radio broadcasting in various capacities on Oahu.Â
"I couldn't be more proud of and happy for Kevin that he is being recognized as the PacWest Sports Information Director of the Year," said Silversword athletic director Dr. Tom Buning. "This well-deserved honor is a tribute to his diligent efforts to tell the story of our amazing student-athletes and highlight their work and accomplishments in both competitions and the classroom."
Hashiro is the first Chaminade SID to win the award. He has never had a full-time assistant at Chaminade, but will for this first time this coming year.
"Kevin's exceptional contributions to Chaminade Athletics for over ten years, logging many seven-day work weeks, have helped put the Silverswords on the rise," Buning added. "His attention to detail, tireless work ethic, and devotion to ensuring mission accomplishment make him an invaluable part of our 'Ohana and is truly worthy of this recognition."
