HONOLULU – The Chaminade University fall athletic season gets fully underway this weekend with soccer and volleyball action.

Also starting this weekend are the men's and women's cross country teams.

The Silverswords begin what they hope will be a successful year at the University of Hawai'i Manoa's Big Wave Invitational at the Kahuku Golf Course.

With the departures of Jaime Guerpo at Hawai'i Hilo and Jackie Sgambati at Hawai'i Pacific, Shadrack Nabea is now the longest-tenured cross country head coach among the local Division II programs.

Now in his 10th year, Nabea may have his best teams yet. On the men's side, Owen Daugherty enters his final year having being the team's No. 1 finisher in all 11 of his career races. Conor McMahon, Peter Jan Ramos and Ben Salinas are returnees from last season while Mason Stewart is a newcomer to the team.

On the women's side, the 'Swords put together a competitive season which culminated in an eighth-place finish at the Pacific West Conference Championships, the team's highest since 2011.

Zoe Lucas returns as she hopes to replicate her successful sophomore season. The former Zoe McDonough exceled last season which included a first-place finish at the Chaminade Invitational.

Also returning to the 'Swords are Caitlin Bocobo and Leila-Jayne Casison. Joining the team this season is junior University of Dayton transfer Maria Steinke and freshmen Cassie Chong, Nikiji Dayse and Jordyn Koki.

The Silverswords host their Chaminade Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 16 at Kapiolani Park. The PacWest Championships this year will be held at Woodward Park in Fresno, California, with Fresno Pacific serving as the host school.
