HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team took on Hawai'i Pacific University for the second time this season, securing the 4-1 win over the Sharks at Queens Beach in Waikiki.
The Silverswords (2-6) took Pairings 1 through 4, while Pairing 5 suffered the only loss.
A close match took place between the No. 1 pairings of
Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) and
Hula Crisostomo (Honolulu/Univ. of Texas El Paso/Moanalua HS) and Kate Allan and Erika Markentin. The Sharks gave the Silverswords a scare in Set 1 before the 'Swords prevailed with a 22-20 score, but the 'Swords fought back in the second to capture the win.
The No. 2 squad for the Silverswords of
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North (Kan.) and
Malena Mihalik (Santa Fe, Argentina/San Eugenio) captured the win over Kohana Fukuchi and Ella Schoene, 21-14 and 21-12.
The No. 3 pairing of of
Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) and
Elli Tsukano (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) and the No. 4 pairings of
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) also defeated their opponents. The No. 3 pairing scores were, 21-16 and 21-18, and the No. 4 pairing scores were, 21-17 and 21-11, the latter being the clinching match.
The Sharks did however secure a win over the 'Swords in the No. 5 pairings match. The No. 5 pairings of
DeLaney Poling (Gilbert, Ariz./Park Univ./Perry HS) and
Lizanyela Lopez (Lima, Peru/Trinity Valley CC/Saco Oliveros HS,) defeated by Kylie Komo and Ella Dotson with a score of 21-14 and 21-17.
HPU, which like CUH is making its debut season in beach volleyball, is 0-2 with both losses coming to the 'Swords.
The Silverswords are next in action at the Hawai'i BeachBows Tournament, as they take on Division I programs Hawai'i, Grand Canyon and Portland from April 13-14. The tournament will be hosted by the BeachBows at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on the UH Manoa campus.
