HONOLULU – With the island of O'ahu being put in a flash flood warning much throughout Friday because of the heavy rain, it wiped out the dual matches at Queen's Beach co-hosted by the Chaminade University and Hawai'i Pacific University beach volleyball teams.
The bad weather also appeared to empty the Silverswords' weekend slate including Saturday's scheduled 11 a.m. match against No. 16 University of Hawai'i.
Not so fast.
On Saturday morning, the 'Swords, who were replaced by Oregon in that time slot, were informed that the match against the Rainbow Wahine at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex would be back on, albeit later in the afternoon.
The Silverswords would make the short drive to their neighbors down the street, although they dropped the match, 5-0.
The Rainbow Wahine won the first two pairings then clinched the match in Flight 3, although the 'Swords tandem of
Audrah Johnson (Nampa, Idaho/Utah State University/Nampa HS) and
Ma'ila Stephens (Mililani, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Siena College/Mililani HS) put together a competitive first set in their 21-15 loss.
At the No. 1 spot,
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North, Mo.) managed to score in double digits in both sets against UH's top squad of Julia Lawrenz and Izadora Stedile in their 21-12, 21-15 defeat.
Chaminade fell to 4-13 while Hawai'i improved to 15-12.
The Silverswords will close out Year 3 of the program on Thursday against HPU at Hunakai Park where the seniors from both teams will be honored after the match, which starts at noon.
