WAIPAHU, O'ahu, Hawai'i – The Chaminade University baseball team played the first five innings Wednesday against Pacific West Conference favorite Azusa Pacific at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park (CORP) Baseball Complex before rain halted the game.
The Silverswords were leading, 7-4, thanks to a three-run bottom of the fifth by on RBI hits from
Casey Kudell (Irvine, Calif./Irvine Valley College/Irvine HS),
Ryan Ruch (San Diego/Patrick Henry) and
Cato Kleinman (Westlake Village, Calif./Monterey Peninsula College/Westlake HS). The Cougars had previously tied it at 4 after facing a 4-1 deficit after two innings.
First pitch was delayed by 16 minutes as the field continued to be prepped as light rain fell through much of the morning and afternoon. There was also a 47-minute rain delay prior to the bottom of the fourth.
Aydan Lobetos (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Then after APU got the run back in the second on a solo homer,
Jake Harper (San Pedro, Calif./El Camino College/San Pedro HS) singled in a run in the bottom of the third followed by Lobetos' double, putting the 'Swords up, 4-1.
The Cougars scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings to knot the score before Chaminade's three-run fifth.
Right before the start of the sixth, the rain returned and forced the suspension of the game, which will resume on Thursday at 1 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled doubleheader, 30 minutes after the completion of the halted game.
