HONOLULU – While the Chaminade University beach volleyball team will be in action at the University of Hawai'i Manoa's Heineken Queens Cup this weekend, the Silverswords will step off the sand following the tournament and return to the indoors for a pair of spring exhibition matches against Division I opponents.
The 'Swords host UNLV on Sunday at McCabe Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m. The Rebels in 2023 were 19-13 and finished third in the Mountain West Conference, earning a berth in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. UNLV has several Hawai'i ties with liberos Alyssa Muraoka (Mid-Pacific Institute) and Isha Knight (Kamehameha-Kapalama) while head coach Malia Shoji is the niece of retired University of Hawai'i coaching legend Dave Shoji.
On Wednesday, March 13, the Silverswords will face Notre Dame, also at McCabe Gym with a first serve time of 4:30 p.m. The Irish were 11-15 this past fall, finishing 12th in the ACC.
Before the 'Swords and Irish meet on the court, the two teams will get together on Monday for a cultural service event at the Papahana Kualoa lo'i (wetland were taro is grown and cultivated) in Kaneohe to learn about Hawaiian land sustainability.
The Silverswords finished the 2023 season at 30-4, setting a school record for wins while earning the NCAA Division II Tournament West Region No. 1 seed for the first time ever.
