HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team on Friday fell to top Division I programs Nebraska and Boise State in the final day of pool play at the Heineken Queens Cup at Queens Beach in Waikiki.
Match 1: Nebraska 4, CUH 1
A thrilling three-set tiebreaker took place between the No. 3 pairs
Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) and
Elli Tsukano (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) against Nebraska's Merritt Beason and Skyler Pierce. Chaminade took the first set, 21-13, but the Cornhuskers took the second, 7-21, to send the match to a tiebreaking third. Chaminade captured the win with a 15-12 decision, the 'Swords' first point in the tournament.
The Silverswords' No. 1 pair of
Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) and
Malena Mihalik (Santa Fe, Argentina/San Eugenio) fell to Ally Batenhorst and Bergen Reilly, 21-14 and 21-11.
The No. 2 squad of
Greta Corti (Varese, Italy/Univ. of San Francisco/Alessandro Manzoni Liceo HS) and
Hula Crisostomo (Honolulu/Univ. of Texas El Paso/Moanalua HS) dropped their match to Lindsay Krause and Lexi Rodriguez, 21-14 and 21-18.
In a matchup between the No. 4 pairings, included
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North (Kan.) and
DeLaney Poling (Gilbert, Ariz./Park Univ./Perry HS) were defeated by Harper Murray and Laney Choboy, 21-16 and 21-10.
The No. 5 squad of
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) gave Nebraska's Olivia Mauch and Andi Jackson a tough battle before falling in the first set, 21-19. Chaminade took the second, 21-15, and Nebraska wrapped up the match winning the third set tiebreaker, 15-7.
Match 2: Boise State 5, CUH 0
Chaminade's new No. 1 tandem of
Ka'apuni and
Crisostomo faced off against the Broncos' Marlayna Bullington and Sierra Land but fell in straight sets, 21-15 and 21-13.
Coming off their court win against Nebraska earlier in the day,
Schilling and
Tsukano were unable to duplicate their fear, falling to Mya Jackson and Addison Wolden, 21-18 and 21-13.
The other three pairs fall to Boise State's squads, who completed a 5-0 over the Silverswords.
Chaminade completed pool play with a 0-4 mark. The Silverswords will open the Heineken Queens Cup bracket play on Saturday at 9 a.m. against Boise State with the winner facing No. 2 seed Saint Mary's in the first semifinal at 11:30 a.m. Host Hawai'i awaits the Pepperdine-Nebraska winner in the other semifinal.
After the finals matchup is set, the fifth-place match will be at 2 p.m. followed by the bronze medal match at 3:15 p.m. and the gold medal match at 4:30 p.m.
