HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team on Monday downed Hawai'i Pacific University by a 4-1 count at Hunakai Park.
The duos of
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane)/
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) in Flight 2 and
DeLaney Poling (Gilbert, Ariz./Park Univ./Perry HS)/
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North (Kan.) in Flight 4 captured their matches to give the 'Swords a 2-0 lead.
Chaminade's third team of
Hula Crisostomo (Honolulu/Univ. of Texas El Paso/Moanalua HS) and
Reina Krueger (Fort Collins, Colo./Liberty Commons) clinched the match victory with a 21-13, 21-17 win.
The most competitive pairing was in Flight 1 where
Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) and
Nanna Inoue (Kula, Maui, Hawai'i/Tyler JC/King Kekaulike HS) won a three-set battle against the Sharks' Erika Markentin and Kate Allen. Ka'apuni and Inoue took the first set, 21-17, before Markentin and Allen squared the match with a 21-18 win. In the final set, Chaminade outlasted HPU in a 15-10 count.
The win improved the 'Swords to 5-9 on the year with all five coming against the Sharks, who fell to 0-6.
The two teams will close the season this weekend with a pair of matches on Saturday and Sunday at Queen's Beach in Waikiki. Saturday's matches get underway at 8 a.m.
