4/23/2024 9:00:00 PM

HONOLULU – Chaminade University Athletics on Tuesday recognized the accomplishments and feats of the 2023-24 academic calendar with the 14th Annual Athletics Awards Ceremony held on the Chaminade campus.

All 12 intercollegiate athletic programs announced their honorees for Most Outstanding, Most Inspirational and Scholar-Athlete while all 28 departing seniors were also honored for the completion of their playing careers.

A new award – the Ho'omau Award – for Comeback Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year went to Kainoa Carpenter from men's soccer and Haley Hayakawa of softball. The honor recognizes a male and female student-athlete who has overcome adversity to excel on the playing surface.

As usual, the most highly anticipated award was the team grade-point average awards, recognizing the highest GPAs among the programs. In the large rostered sports (11 or more participants), men's basketball captured the honors with a 3.51 GPA, their first such honor since 2015-16. In small rostered sports (10 or less), women's tennis earned the award for the third consecutive year, also with a 3.51 GPA.

Individually, Ross Reeves of men's basketball was Chaminade's Male Athlete of the Year while Female Athlete of the Year went to softball's Keaolani Takemura-Brehme. The prestigious Silversword Award, which goes to a student-athlete who exemplifies teamwork, sportsmanship and community service, went to Naomi Takata of women's soccer. All three awards were announced at the Chaminade Co-Curricular Awards on April 17.
