HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team on Monday defeated Hawai'i Pacific University, 3-2.
The Silverswords won the first two flights to take a two-set lead.
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) won their No. 4 flight, 21-10 and 21-11 followed by
Sophie Schilling (Berlin, Germany/Alaska/Schul- and Leistungsportszentrum Berlin HS) and
Elli Tsukano (Austin, Texas/James Bowie) at No. 3, 21-16, 22-16.
HPU edged closer as their Flight No. 1 squad of Erika Markentin and Kate Allen, won 21-14, 21-15. However,
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North (Kan.) and
Malena Mihalik (Santa Fe, Argentina/San Eugenio) clinched the match victory with a 21-19, 21-13 win over Lauren Harris and Marley Sandoval at No. 2.
The Silverswords improved to 3-6 on the season while the Sharks fell to 0-3. The meeting was the third between the two first-year programs with the 'Swords having won all three.
Chaminade will be at the University of Hawai'i Manoa's BeachBows Senior Weekend event this weekend when they face nationally-ranked Grand Canyon on Saturday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex on the UH Manoa campus.
