Volleyball Rises to No. 7 in AVCA Poll

9/16/2024 1:33:00 PM

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team rose six spots to No. 7 in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, released Monday.

The ranking is the highest-ever for the Silverswords in the Division II era. Their previous high was No. 12 earlier this season.

The 'Swords (7-3) significant rise in the poll was thanks to a 3-1 mark in last weekend's Colorado Premier Challenge. Along the way, they knocked off No. 2 Wayne State, Wheeling University and No. 3 and host MSU Denver before running out of steam in the championship match against ninth-ranked West Texas A&M, losing in five sets. Combined with their win over then No. 1 Cal State Los Angeles on Sept. 6, the Silverswords can claim victories over the top three squads in the poll.

The University of Tampa remains the top team in Division II. MSU Denver is at No. 2 while West Texas A&M jumped from ninth to third. Nebraska Kearney and Southwest Minnesota State round out the top five.

Pacific West Conference member Point Loma entered the rankings at No. 25. Other West Region squads in the poll include Cal Poly Pomona at 13, Cal State LA at 14 and Cal State San Bernardino at 19.

Chaminade opens Pacific West Conference action Thursday against Menlo College at McCabe Gymnasium at 7 p.m.
