HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's and men's cross country teams competed in their second race of the season Saturday, hosting their own Chaminade Invitational at Kapiolani Park.
The Silverswords had the first two finishers in the women's 5-kilometer race while
Peter Jan Ramos (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) recorded his best career overall finish as the runner up in the men's 5-k.
Ramos clocked a time of 18:28.8, trailing only individual champion Aaron Garcia of Hawai'i Pacific University.
Conor McMahon (Pacific, Calif./Archbishop Riordan) was sixth overall at 22:44.3 followed by
Sebastian Castro (San Diego, Calif./Palomar College/Great Oak HS) at 23:04.4,
Mac Zawistoski (Coto de Caza, Calif./JSerra Catholic) at 25:21.7 and
Jacob Mantiply (Temecula, Calif./University of Saint Katherine/Great Oak HS) at 30:49.1.
The 'Swords men finished second with 35 points while the Sharks won the team title with 20.
On the women's side, the University of Hawai'i Hilo won the team race with 29 points while Chaminade finished second with 41 and HPU 50.
However,
Maria Steinke (Columbus, Ohio/University of Dayton/Bexley HS) enjoyed her second career medalist finish, winning the individual title with a time of 19:44.0. She was followed by teammate and runner-up
Nikiji Dayse (Memphis, Tenn./Bartlett) who crossed the finish at 19:46.5.
UH Hilo won the team title by placing four of the next five runners.
Jordyn Koki (Ewa Beach, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) was the Silverswords' third finisher at 24:11.7 followed by
Emily Cooper (Mount Desert Island, Maine/Mount Desert Island) at 25:05.3 then
Leila-Jayne Casison (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Waipahu) with a time of 25:58.9.
Jaycelle Taitano (Sinajana, Guam/George Washington) and
Nicholas Gebbia (San Antonio, Texas/Lee) rounded out the 'Swords with respective times of 28:37.2 and 32:49.6.
The Silverswords next race will be the UH Hilo Invitational at the Naniloa Golf Course on the Big Island on Oct. 5.
