HONOLULU – The Chaminade University beach volleyball team opened their lone major tournament of the season Thursday at the University of Hawai'i Heineken Queen's Cup at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.
The Silverswords dropped both matches against their more established opponents in Saint Mary's College, a 4-1 defeat, and the University of Washington, a 5-0 loss.
Match 1: SMC 4, CUH 1
Chaminade's lone win of the day was the duo of
Letizia Cammillucci (Padova, Italy/San Jose State/Liceo Amedeo di Savoia Duca D'asosta HS) and
Anna Stucchi (Roncello, Italy/Santa Clara University/I.I.S. Ezio Vanoni HS), who dispatched Saint Mary's Sedona Sherman and Angie Bour, 21-17, 18-21, 15-10 in the No. 3 pairing.
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) forced a third set in their match against Chloe Swanson and Nya Crump before succumbing at the No. 2 spot.
Match 2: UW 5, CUH 0
In the first-ever meeting between the two programs, the Huskies took Flights 2 and 4 then clinched the match at the No. 5 pairing. Ama and Talpash, who moved up as the 'Swords' top duo, was the final match to finish, battling Telia Allen and Jade Sadeiko to a 21-18, 21-13 decision.
The Silverswords will face Tulane University as the Heineken Queen's Cup continues on Friday. The match will start at 12:15 p.m.
