CUH MS: 2009 Recruiting Class Announced

Large class looks to provide depth, talent to Swords

Honolulu, HI- Second-year Chaminade University men's soccer head coach Jason Kelley has been hard working hard during the offseason to identify talented players who will represent Chaminade University well on both the field and classroom.

 

Kelley has announced the recent addition of his 2009 recruits, all of whom have committed to attend Chaminade and compete for the Silverswords beginning this fall.

 

 “I believe with the talent we've brought in to the program, we have an opportunity to continue to move the program forward.  The 2009 class has a lot of experience winning at many levels, with some players coming from national power clubs, such as Dallas Texans and CASL, we expect them to bring that competitive winning mentality to Chaminade,” said Kelley. “We are a young program and with the type of hard working men I've brought in for the fall, we have the confidence we will turn heads and have high hopes of reaching great heights. We want to lay the groundwork for a program that will contend for conference championships in the near future.”

 

The group, which represents Kelley's first CUH recruiting class, includes key college transfer player forward William “Eddie” West (Cape Fear). Additionally, it includes some key prep players goalkeeper Daniel Dartt (Leilehua, HI), defenders Michael Werdien (Minneapolis, MN) and Kyle Suan (Mililani, HI), Midfielders Esteban Rodriguez (San Antonio, TX) and Austin Maher San Antonio, TX), forwards Warren “Sage” Spencer (Honolulu, HI) and Trevor Parrish (Dothan, AL).

 

William “Eddie” West – the 6'5 West, who has three years of collegiate eligibility remaining, who led Cape Fear Community College and tallied the second most goals, assists and points, was selected Player of the Year for the 2008 NJCAA Region 10. West, was also named a 2008 All American and NSCAA 1st Team All American, he became the first Sea Devil to earn all three honors in one season. Prior to his collegiate career, West was a member of the Nationally recognized Capital Area Soccer League (CASL) program and a key member on the 87 CASL Elite soccer team. 

 

Daniel Dartt – 2-year starter at Leilehua High School, earned 1st team OIA and 2nd team HHSAA honors during his senior year by recording a .58 GAA. During his senior year Dart was stellar in goal only allowing 7 goals in 12 league games. Dart was also a member of the Hawaii Rush Soccer Club.

 

Michael Werdien – 3 year starter at Blaine Senior High School, His senior year he captained the team to their best finish every in the state tournament. He earned all-conference recognition for his efforts. In addition, he played in club soccer for Coon Rapid Fire winning MN league titles and reaching the final four at state tournament.

 

Kyle Suan – 3-year starter at Mililani High School, Suan lead the team to the OIA Championships and Finalist of the HHSAA 2009 State Tournament. Kyle's exceptional play in the back earned him 1st team OIA and HHSAA honors. Kyle was a member of Hawaii Rush Soccer Club and selected to Hawaii Olympic Development Program team.

 

Esteban Rodriguez and Austin Maher – This dynamic midfield duo were 3 year starters at Tom Clark HS. The duo lead their High School to a league title during their junior year and to the state 3rd round during their senior year. Austin captained his team during his senior campaign and earned all conference honors for his role. Esteban was a key member of their program soccer several key goals during the season. Both are members on the National recognized Dallas Texans Soccer Club and members of the Texas ODP.

 

Warren “Sage” Spencer – a 4 year starter at St Louis School, Sage lead the Crusaders to their best ILH finish in years which earned him IHL 1st team and HHSAA 2nd team honors. He also earned a spot in the 2009 HYSA Senior All-Star game. He leaves St. Louis with several of its soccer records and looks forward to continuing his collegiate career on the same field where he earned those records.

 

Trevor Parrish – a 4-year starter at Northview High School, amassed over 50 goals and 40 assists during his High School career. Parrish earned all region honors is sophomore and senior year scoring 18 goals in each season. His 18 goals during his sophomore year were the best in the region and his 20 assists were 3rd in the region. Trevor captained his team during his junior and senior year leading them to the state tournament both years. He leaves Northview with the majority of its scoring records. Trevor also played for the Columbus Red Star Soccer Club, which has produced several collegiate and professional players like Leonard Marshall, Harold Urquijo, and Ryan Messner.

 

Kelley feels the squad will have a good opportunity for a winning season with the hard work from the players and his assistant coaches.

 

Kelley added, “This class has Super Y-League experience, US Academy experience, high school league all-stars, and numerous club and high school state championships. I expect many of them to challenge for starting spots right away and help create a winning mentality here at Chaminade. It has been a pleasure getting to know these student-athletes and we look forward to watching them grow and develop at CUH."
