Phoenix, AZ- Chaminade's first match on a five game road swing saw the Swords fall to Grand Canyon in three sets in the first of two matches between the Pac West Conference rivals. The Swords and 'Lopes battled for three sets with GCU taking the first two hotly contested sets 25-22 and 25-22. Chaminade struggled in the later stages of the third set and the Antelopes took advantage, winning 25-16 to complete the sweep.
Freshman
Crystal Powell (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) led with 11 kills. CUH junior
Poerava Gantt (Kapaa, HI/Kapaa) had 6 kills and 16 digs in the loss.
Senior setter
Tanya Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) had 23 assists and 7 digs on the match. The Swords were competitive throughout the night, holding leads in all three sets. Chaminade led at 15-14 in the first set, 18-13 in the second set and 9-3 in the third set of the match.
Junior
Kristy Inamasu (Kahului, HI/Maui) was impressive defensively, digging 19 GCU attacks on the night. The Swords lost the overall dig battle 54-65. Chaminade was outhit by GCU .195 to .058.
Grand Canyon was led by Shelby Taylor with 11 kills.
With the loss, Chaminade moves to 3-8, 0-4 in the PWC. Grand Canyon moves to 8-10, 4-3 in the PWC. The Swords are back in action in Phoenix, AZ on Saturday, October 9th at 6:00 PM PT in a rematch with GCU.
