Phoenix, AZ- Chaminade rebounded this evening, taking a five set marathon against Grand Canyon in five sets after falling in three sets last night to the Pac West Conference rivals. The Swords and 'Lopes played a match that could have gone either way, but Chaminade got a much needed win in five sets (21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 18-16).
The Swords were down to GCU match point at 12-14, but rallied in the fifth set; digging deep to win 18-16, as the fifth set and match could not be decided by the first to 15.
CUH junior
Poerava Gantt (Kapaa, HI/Kapaa) had 16 kills and 24 digs in an impressive performance. Junior
Allie Board (Redwood City, CA/Notre Dame) contributed 13 kills and 2 blocks, hitting .345 on the match. Freshman
Crystal Powell (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) and
Pisila Tukia (Tempe, AZ/Tempe) each had 10 kills for the Swords.
Senior setter
Tanya Alvino (Brentwood, CA/Liberty) had 55 assists and 11 digs running the Chaminade attack.
Junior
Kristy Inamasu (Kahului, HI/Maui) was again a digging machine, digging 30 GCU attacks in the five set conference showdown. The Swords won an amazing dig battle 100-99. Another stat that was indicative of how tight this match was: Chaminade and GCU had the exact same hitting percentage for the night, .164 to .164. Team blocks went to Chaminade 8-5.
Grand Canyon was led by Shelby Taylor with 16 kills.
With the win, Chaminade moves to 4-8, 1-4 in the PWC. Grand Canyon moves to 8-11, 4-4 in the PWC. The Swords are back in action in St. George, UT on Monday, October 11th at 7:00 PM MT against Dixie State.
