Box Score 2 KANEOHE, HI –Chaminade opened the season against Hawaii Pacific at Howard A. Okita Field, falling to the SeaWarriors in a Sunday afternoon doubleheader 5-0 and 7-0.
In game one, HPU got on the board early, scoring two runs on three hits in the first inning off Chaminade sophomore pitcher
Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA, Redondo Union). The Swords looked to respond in the third inning, but left
Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) on second base. The Sea Warriors tacked on runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings for the 5-0 win.
CUH had 4 hits in game one, while HPU had 9, including Lauren Beard going 3-3.
Brett Aspel took the loss for the Swords, giving up four earned runs in six innings. Melissa Kirby earned the win in the circle for Hawaii Pacific.
The Sea Warriors got off to a quick start in game two as well, scoring seven runs in the first two innings of action. Chaminade looked to respond in the third inning as sophomore
Samantha Ford (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) and senior
Tumamaopavaiai Enos (Pahoa, HI/Pahoa) started the inning with back to back singles. The Swords were unable to capitalize as senior
Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) flied out to end the inning. No more runs were scored and HPU earned the 7-0 win. CUH had three hits, while HPU tallied 10 in the win in game two.
Sophomore pitcher
Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin High) took the loss for CUH in game two, giving up seven runs in two innings of work. Kristen Caskey earned the win for Hawaii Pacific. Nicole Morrow went 3-3 for HPU.
Coach Kent Yamaguchi commented on the doubleheader: “We could not get our bats going. We played good defense, but HPU hit well.”
Chaminade is back in action for a doubleheader against Simon Fraser on February 15
th in Waipio, HI (Central Oahu Regional Park). First pitch is set for 4:30 PM HT.
The Swords move to 0-2, 0-0 in PWC in defeat, while Hawaii Pacific moves to 4-0 overall.
