Box Score WAIPIO, HI – Chaminade split a pair of games against defending Pac West champion and 2013 pre-season favorite, California Baptist, losing the first, 5-1, but taking the second, 6-2, in games played at Corp Field.
In the first game, the Lancers got on the board in the first, taking advantage of a pair of walks, ultimately scoring on a 2-run error.
The Swords got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third when
Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) tripled into the deep right corner. Strom-Okimoto came home on the next at-bat on an
Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) RBI sacrifice fly to right, bringing the Swords to within 2-1.
The Lancers threatened to plate more runs in the top of the fifth, but
Elia Lizarraga (Torrance, Calif./Narbonne) took away a potential home run with a leaping catch over the centerfield fence.
CBU did add some insurance in the seventh with three runs, including a 2-run homer by Rachel Meyer to center, to win, 5-1.
Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) took the loss while the Lancers' Jessica Avila got the win.
In Game 2, the Swords jumped all over Lancers' starter, Kayla Hatch, as the first six batters reached safely.
Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) brought two runs home on a double to open the scoring. Two batters later, Lizarraga delivered an RBI single to right. Another run would come in via an error on
Samantha Ford's (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) fielder's choice, to make it 4-0 Swords.
CUH plated two more runs in the fourth, both on wild pitches, to push the score to 6-0.
CBU would get two runs in the sixth on a 2-run double by Sloan McHann, to close to 6-2.
Kaitlyn Watanabe (3-4) went the distance and picked up the win, while Hatch took the loss.
Chaminade's record is now 6-10 on the season and 2-4 in Pac West play. The Lancers are 14-9 and 8-6.
The Swords face Grand Canyon in a Pac West doubleheader this Saturday at Corp Field. First pitch is set for 10 a.m. HST. Those games will be webcasted on goswords.com.
