Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN RAFAEL, CA – The Chaminade softball team opened up its first road trip of the season with a doubleheader sweep of Dominican College of California, 4-2 in 10 innings, and 7-0. It's the first wins of the season for the Silverswords away from Corp Field.

In Game 1, the Swords found themselves down, 1-0, after the first inning, but took the lead in the second. Back-to-back base hits by Tumamaopavaiai Enos (Pahoa, HI/Pahoa) and Elia Lizarraga (Torrance, CA/Narbonne) put runners at second and third with no outs. Three batters later, Ashley Phelps (Torrance, CA/South) singled home Brianne Hornos (Lihue, HI/Kauai), pinch-running for Enos, and Lizarraga, but Phelps was thrown out at second to end the inning.

In the DUC fourth, Samantha Talavera hit an infield single, but an error on the play brought home Leslie Mesa to tie the game at 2.

CUH had chances to bring the go-ahead run in both the sixth and seventh innings, but left runners stranded at second in both instances. Meanwhile, Swords pitcher Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, CA/Redondo Union) allowed only one base runner in the last 10 batters she faced headed into extra innings.

Then in the Swords' half of the 10th inning, as per conference rules, the international tiebreaker went into effect. Phelps was placed at second to begin the inning and was pinch-run for by Kelsea Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle). Shannan Hokama (Torrance, CA/South) moved Berinobis to third on a sacrifice bunt. The next batter, Kori Berinobis (Kaneohe, HI/Castle) delivered the go-ahead single to center, bringing her twin sister home. The Swords added an insurance run when Lizarraga singled up the middle, scoring Kori Berinobis, and the Swords led, 4-2, going to the bottom of the 10th.

Aspel retired the side in order in the DUC 10th to get the win for the Swords, improving to 6-7 on the season. Karly Harris took the loss for the Penguins, falling to 4-14. Kori Berinobis went 2-for-5 at the dish with an RBI, while Lizarraga and Phelps each went 2-for-4.

In Game 2, the Swords took advantage of a pair of second inning Penguin errors. The latter brought home both Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) and Lizarraga.

Chaminade added two more runs in the third inning when another error plated both Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) and Kori Berinobis, making it 4-0.

The Swords increased their lead in fourth, getting RBI singles from Berinobis and Strom-Okimoto, making it 6-0 Chaminade. Strom-Okimoto added another RBI single in the sixth for CUH's final run to make it 7-0.

Kaitlyn Watanabe worked a complete game shutout, scattering six hits, while walking two, earning the win to even her record to 5-5. Ashlyn Moriarity (1-13) took the loss. Strom-Okimoto went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and a run scored, while Lizarraga went 2-for-4. Berinobis went 1-for-2, scoring twice.

“It was good to get the first two under our belt because it's always tough no matter who we play because of all the travel, the pressure of having the Mainland kids play in front of their parents for the first time,” Swords head coach Kent Yamaguchi said. “First time we played the international tie breaker and we executed it with perfection.”

The Swords improved to 11-13 overall and 7-7 in the Pac West, vaulting them into a tie for fifth place in the standings, along with California Baptist and Holy Names.

The Swords and Penguins face each other again in a Pac West doubleheader tomorrow, beginning at 12 p.m. PDT (9 a.m. HST).
