Box Score WAIPIO, HI - The Chaminade softball team split a Pac West doubleheader against Dixie State today at Corp Field, falling in the first game, 6-3, and winning the second, 7-1.
In Game 1, the Swords'
Letisha Vaba(Stockton, Calif.) and
Samantha Ford (Honolulu, HI/Word of Life) walked, bringing
Shannan Hokama (Torrance, Calif./South) to the plate who prompted smashed the pitch beyond the right center fence for a 3-run home run, the first in her career.
CUH pitcher
Brett Aspel (Redondo Beach, Calif./Redondo Union) would keep the Red Storm at bay until the seventh inning. Dixie State would score two runs before Anna Cue's single to left brought home the tying run. After the Swords got the second out, Siera Phillips smacked a go-ahead 3-run homer to give the Red Storm a 6-3 lead and, eventually, the win.
Hokama went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI on the homer. Michelle Duncan got the win in relief, while Aspel suffered the loss.
In the second game, Chaminade got on the board in the first inning on an RBI ground out by
Tumamaopavaiai Enos (Pahoa, HI/Pahoa).
The Swords erupteded for six runs in the second, bringing 12 batters to the plate. Vaba and Ford started the inning with back-to-back singles.
Ashley Phelps (Torrance, Calif./South) singled, but the centerfielder misplayed the ball, allowing Vaba to come home. Hokama followed with an RBI single.
Kori Berinobis (Kaneohem HI/Castle) then singled to left, but the ball scooted past the leftfielder for another error, scoring both Hokama and Phelps. Two batters later, a throwing error by the pitcher would bring Berinobis home, the fifth run of the inning.
After a pitching change, a fourth error in the inning loaded the bases. Ford then put the ball in play to the shortstop, but the throw to second was late, bringing
Aja Keyes (Kaneohe, HI/Lutheran) for the sixth run.
Starting pitcher
Kaitlyn Watanabe (Kula, HI/Baldwin) would take over from there, scattering four hits. She also wiggled out of a bases loaded jam in the third. She would earn the win, improving to 2-4 on the year. Kate Coffey took the loss for the Red Storm.
Rayna Strom-Okimoto (Aiea, HI/Aiea) and Vaba paced the Swords attack with three hits each.
Chaminade is now 5-9 overall and 1-3 in Pac West play, while Dixie State is 13-8 and 4-4. The Swords face California Baptist in a conference doubleheader at Corp Field, beginning at 4:30 p.m.
