HONOLULU – The Chaminade men's soccer team opened Pacific West Conference action, dropping a 3-0 decision to Hawai'i-Hilo Saturday afternoon at St. Louis Field.
The Swords remained winless on the year at 0-5 and 0-1 while the Vulcans improved to 3-1 and 1-0.
UH-Hilo struck eight minutes in when Scott Hill headed in James Yamane's corner kick at the right post.
A bizarre play ensued at the 82nd minute when a collision between several Vulcans and Silverswords battling for a loose ball on the CUH side of the field resulted in a heap of players on the ground. The players stopped as if play had been whistled dead, but an alert Scott Hill of UH-Hilo kicked the ball into the goal, resulting in a 2-0 Vulcans lead.
Zachary Solarte topped off the scoring two minutes later with a goal coming off a free kick.
Chaminade showed a more aggressive offense with a season-high 21 shots attempted and actually outshot UHH by four. Sam Galloway had a season-high four attempts while Colton Gallt had three. Five other CUH players had two each. The Swords also held the corner kick advantage, 8-5.
Chaminade returns to the field to make their first Mainland trip of the season when it faces Dixie State in St. George, Utah on Sept. 30.
