Three Silverswords Named All-PacWest

IRVINE, Calif. – The Chaminade University men's basketball team placed three Silverswords on the All-Pacific West Conference Teams which were announced Wednesday.
 
Grant Dressler (Las Vegas/Sacramento State/Palo Verde HS) and Tyler Cartaino (Newbury Park, Calif./Newbury Park) were selected by the conference coaches to the first team while Erik Scheive (Marysville, Calif./Yuba College/Marysville HS) was named to the second team.
 
The 'Swords were the only team to have multiple players on the first team.
 
Dressler finished the regular season as the PacWest's second-leading scorer at 19.1 points per game. He led the conference in 3-pointers at 3.0 per game while hitting them at a 43.7 percent clip which was also second overall. Dressler was tied for fourth in the PacWest in assists (4.4) and played a PacWest-leading 36.3 minutes per game. He also came through with big baskets, hitting a game-winning 3-pointer at Azusa Pacific and had another at Concorida which forced overtime.
 
Entering the 2018-19 season with career averages of 2.1 points and 2.3 rebounds per game, Cartaino became one of the PacWest's most improved players, averaging 17.3 points while pulling down 6.4 rebounds. He led the conference in field goal percentage at 59.3 percent (60.1 in PacWest games) and shot 79 percent from the free throw line which was sixth in the PacWest. Cartaino was career 6-for-23 from the free throw line prior to this season.
 
Scheive followed up his standout junior season by improving his numbers. His scoring (16.6), rebounds (6.0), field goal percentage (54.9) and blocks (0.7) were all improvements from the previous year and also were among the PacWest's top 10. He also shot 81.7 percent from the free throw line while hitting 33 triples.
 
Point Loma's Daulton Hommes was the PacWest Player of the Year and was also the Newcomer of the Year.
 
The Silverswords open PacWest Tournament action Thursday when they face No. 6-seed Holy Names at 12:30 p.m. PST (10:30 a.m. HST).
