Cartaino Earns PacWest Academic Honor

IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University redshirt junior forward/guard Tyler Cartaino on Wednesday was named the Pacific West Conference 2018-19 Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Year, one of 15 student-athletes named Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of the conference's 15 sports.

The Newbury Park, Calif. native is a three-time Academic All-PacWest honoree who carried a cumulative grade-point-average of 3.83 while receiving his Bachelor's degree in Accounting in May. Cartino also earned Google Cloud Academic All-America Second Team status earlier this summer.

On the court, Cartaino had a breakout year, posting 17.7 point and 6.6 rebounding averages both of which ranked among the PacWest leaders while his 59.0 field goal percentage led the conference.

Cartaino, who will be pursuing his MBA while competing in his final year of athletic eligibility in 2019-20, is now eligible for the PacWest Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year which will selected among the other six other conference sport awardees. The winner will be announced next week.

Cartaino is the second Chaminade student-athlete to earn an individual sport scholar-athlete of the year award by the PacWest. Glacen Florita earned the honor for women's basketball in 2015.

Voting was conducted by the conference's 12 sports information directors and was based on both academic and on-field performance.
