Cartaino Earns PacWest Scholar-Athlete of Year Honor

IRVINE, Calif. – Chaminade University swingman Tyler Cartaino on Monday was named the Pacific West Conference 2018-19 Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year as voted by the conference's athletics directors.

The native of Newbury Park, Calif., was selected over the six other scholar-athletes of the year among the seven men's sports the PacWest sponsors (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis and track and field). He graduated with his Bachelor's degree in accounting this past May with a cumulative 3.83 grade point average and will pursue an MBA next season.

The award is the latest in a long list of accolades – both on- and off-the court – for the 6-6 incoming redshirt senior for the '18-19 year. Last week, Cartaino was named the PacWest Men's Basketball Scholar-Athlete of the Week, along with earning Academic All-PacWest for a third time. He was also a Google Cloud All-America® Second Team selection.

On the hardwood, Cartaino earned All-PacWest First Team honors after finishing among the conference leaders in scoring (17.7) and rebounds (6.6) while finishing as the PacWest's field goal shooting champion at 59.0 percent. He was also named to the PacWest All-Tournament Team after posting solid numbers as he helped guide the 'Swords to the conference semifinals.

Cartaino is the first Chaminade student-athlete to earn the overall scholar-athlete of the year award.

PacWest Female Student-Athlete of the Year went to Keagan Bolibol of Point Loma women's soccer and track and field.
