A new feature has been added to the GoSwords.com website, where each week, the Hawai'i Pacific Health Silversword Male and Female Athlete of the Week will be named.
Â
The award, sponsored by Hawai'i Pacific Health, goes to one male and female athlete and will be announced each Tuesday for events taking place from Monday through Sunday the previous week.
Â
The first honorees go to freshmen cross country runners
Peyton Oshiro (Male) and
Alena Albertson (Female) for the week ending Sept. 1.
Â
Oshiro, the Honolulu native from Hawai'i Baptist Academy competing in his first career collegiate race at the University of Hawai'i Big Wave Invitational on Aug. 30, was the first Silversword to finish the 5-kilometer run, logging a time of 18:08.00, finishing 14th overall.
Â
Albertson also had her first career collegiate race end in success at the Big Wave Invitational. Competing against runners from three Division I programs, the Austin, Texas, native from Cedar Park High School, was the second Division II runner to cross, finishing the 5-k race in 20:10.00. Her time helped the 'Swords finish ahead of Hawai'i Hilo for the first time in nearly three years. Albertson was named the PacWest Freshman of the Week, becoming the first Chaminade cross country runner to earn a weekly conference award.
Â
For the week of Sept. 1-8, volleyball's
Lataisia Saulala (Morgan Hill, Calif./Oakwood) is the Hawai'i Pacific Health Silversword Female Athlete of the Week.
Â
The 6-2 sophomore helped the Silverswords to a perfect 4-0 start at the season-opening Hawai'i Challenge last weekend. Saulala twice set career highs in kills in consecutive matches (nine vs. Sonoma State, 11 vs. West Virginia State).
Â
She hit .431 during the week and contributed with 10 blocks.
Â
Note: No HPH Silversword Male Athlete of the Week was awarded for Sept. 8 due to no men's teams being in action during the week.
