HONOLULU – The Chaminade University men's and women's cross country teams were back in action on Saturday, hosting their own Chaminade Invitational at Kapiolani Park.
Running through wet conditions due to rain in the hours leading up to the race, the Silverswords men saw four runners place in the top 10 in the team's second race of the year. Freshman
Peyton Oshiro (Honolulu/Hawai'i Baptist Academy) came in fifth overall, clocking a time of 30:50 in the 8-kilometer race.
The 'Swords had the seventh-, eighth- and ninth-place finishers with
Beau Larsen (Papillion, Neb./Daniel Gross Catholic) at 32:26,
Elijah Bernardo-Flores (Waipahu, O'ahu, Hawai'i/Kamehameha-Kapalama) at 33:58 and
Joseph Yoakum (Gibralter, Mich./Wayne State/Carlson HS) at 35:14.
Matthew Schmidt (Hanalei, Kaua'i, Hawai'i/Hawai'i Technology Academy) hit the finish line at 36:02 followed by
Josiah Rodrigues (Honoka'a, Hawai'i/Honoka'a) at 39:22 and
Rocco Deangelo (Mebane, N.C./Southern Alamance), making his season debut at 40:57.
Luka Motschmann of Hawai'i Pacific won medalist honors at 27:52 while HPU also won the team title with 16 points. Chaminade had 40 points in the competition.
On the women's side, freshman
Alena Albertson (Austin, Texas/Cedar Park) continued to impress, finishing the 5-k race third overall at 21:00. It is the highest finish by a 'Swords runner since Emily Ochsner took second at the Hawai'i Hilo Invitational on Oct. 13, 2012.
Joining Alberston in the top 10 was
Olivia Mariucci (Templeton, Calif./Templeton) who broke the tape at 22:29.
Riley Hallman (Renner, S.D./Tri-Valley) finished third among CUH runners at 25:08, followed by
Eri Leong (Las Vegas, Nev./SECTA) at 25:16,
Montserrat Lanfranco (Honolulu/Roosevelt) at 25:27 and
Alicia Dugan (Renton, Wash./Peninsula College/Kentridge HS) at 26:19.
Shannon McLish was Hawai'i-Manoa was the race's individual winner at 19:56 while HPU captured the team title with 36 points. Chaminade finished fourth with 74 points, just one behind third-place finisher Hawai'i Hilo.
