This Week in ’Swords History: Women’s Soccer Pulls Off Upset

Every Monday, GoSwords.com will publish "This Week in 'Swords History presented by Big City Diner" which looks back at significant events and some of the memorable games that helped shape Chaminade University Athletics into what it is today.

Oct. 27, 2016: Women's Soccer Shocks Point Loma
Heading down the stretch of the 2016 season, Chaminade and Point Loma were in opposite sides of the Pacific West Conference spectrum: The Sea Lions were in control with a conference-leading 25 points (8-1-1 PacWest record) and was on a nine-game undefeated streak including eight consecutive wins. Meanwhile the Silverswords were trying to move into the conference's middle tier.

Nicole Nishiki scored the game's lone goal vs. Point Loma.

On paper, the game appeared to be a mismatch. The 'Swords, however, had already faced two other conference contenders in Concordia (a one-goal loss in the final minutes) and California Baptist (a 1-1 draw).

The 'Swords got the game's only goal in the 10th minute off a corner kick from Nicole Nishiki which had curled over the wave of defenders, barely breaking the plane of the goal.

From there it was Chaminade's defense which took over. Facing an onslaught of shots, goalkeepers Brandee Lane and Majorlyn McMillan combined for 11 of the 'Swords' 13 saves and helped keep PLNU out of the net for the final 70 minutes to ensure the conference's biggest upset of the year and in program history..
