HONOLULU – Earlier this month, the Chaminade University women's volleyball team helped host the Special Buddy Connection Camp on the university's campus.
Members of the Silverswords spent an hour with the program's youngsters who participated in the one-day camp, teaching various drills including passing, setting and spiking. They also chatted with them on being student-athletes, some of the struggles they went through in life and how they overcame them.
The campers were also visited by the university's admissions office, had resilience conversations on how to overcome life's obstacles, received decorated snacks and had lunch at the Silversword Café.
The group also attended the play "Little Shop of Horrors" at Kaimuki High School and had an overnight stay at the Ala Moana Hotel.
The Special Buddy Connection campers and counselors all suffer physical conditions that require them to use the restroom differently.
"It was great to have the Chaminade volleyball team spend time with the Special Buddy Connection Camp," said camp organizer and counselor
Shawn Sueoka. "Some of these kids will never get a chance to play sports and it was a great opportunity for them to meet some of the student-athletes and play some sports with them. The players were great with the kids and the children enjoyed every second of being with the Chaminade women's volleyball team."
