’Swords Ho‘okahi: Randi Fontes, Women’s Soccer

In Hawaiian language, "ho'okahi" translates "to make one."

On Mondays and Thursdays over the next five weeks, GoSwords.com will talk to select returning student-athletes from all 10 Chaminade University sports about how they are learning from home, keeping busy and coping with the current situation.

Feature here is junior Randi Fontes of women's soccer. The Wahiawa, O'ahu, Hawai'i native is a two-time All-Pacific West Conference Second Team selection, having earned both honors in both her seasons wearing a Silverswords uniform. She currently ranks third all-time in goals (8) and points (19).

Q (GS.com): What are you missing the most about Chaminade?
A (ES): Being able to see all my friends and teammates every day. I also miss being able to practice altogether as one unit. Another think is in-person, face-to-face classes because online classes are harder to keep up with.

Q: Outside of distance learning, what are you doing to pass the time?
A: I'm working out and spending quality time with my family. Another thing I do is tan in my yard because I'm getting pale from not being able to go to the beach.

Q: What are you doing to keep your spirits up during the situation?
A: Just knowing that this will be over soon, and when it is, we can all go back to how life was before. But for now, just doing what I can to stay positive and just looking on the bright side of things.10825

Q: How are you staying connected with you coaches and teammates?
A: We keep connected through our messaging app called GroupMe. We also have an email thread with our coaches so they can keep us all updated on what's going on and to keep us informed. For workouts, we use the app, TeamBuilder, and (Head Strength and Conditioning) Coach Erin (Hickok) keeps in touch with us through there and gives us daily workouts to do.

Q: Have you learned any new skills or picked up new hobbies that you otherwise would not have if not for the current situation?
A: New skills I've learned during this time is baking and making whipped coffee. Other hobbies that I have picked up are playing basketball, ping pong, dirt biking, spikeball, card games and playing Fortnite. I also asked my dad to make us Portuguese horseshoes so we can all play and he did. My family spends a lot of time outside and we are all so competitive when it comes to games or sports but it's all fun.

Q: What is your favorite on-the-field or on-court memory from this past 2019-20 year?
A: Mines is scoring goals for my team. I love scoring goals and I think it's the best feeling especially when you work so hard for it.

Q: What is the first thing you will do after we return to a sense of "normalcy?"
A: The first thing I'm going to do after everything goes back to normal is go to the beach. I miss the beach so much and it is truly my happy place. I will also go out to see all of my friends.
