Chaminade University outfielder
Haley Hayakawa (Torrance, Calif./South) and pitcher/designated player
Taylor Genera (Norwalk, Calif./Whitney) were named Tuesday to the Division II Collegiate Conference Commissioners (D2CCA) All-West Region Second Team.
Hayakawa, who was chosen as one of three outfielders on the second team, was the Silverswords' batting champion, hitting .377 on the season, the highest average by a 'Sword since 2014 along with a school-record .506 on-base percentage. The freshman started 21 games in left field and two more in center and had a fielding percentage of .960. Hayakawa, was named to the All-Pacific West Conference Third Team, was also plunked a league-leading 10 times.
Genera was selected as a second team utility pitcher and had a solid season both in the circle and at the plate. The sophomore was 6-3 on the season and had an ERA of 2.34, the seventh-lowest in school history with at least 50 innings pitched. The sophomore held opponents to a .247 average and in 68 2/3 innings, allowed just 29 runs and 27 walks while striking out 23. At the plate, Genera hit .295 with a team-leading 14 RBI. She also proved to be a dangerous hitter with the game on the line with two walk-off hits.
Hayakawa and Genera are the first 'Swords to make the D2CCA West Region squad since
Rayna Strom-Okimoto did it in 2012. It also marks the first time in program history the softball team has placed multiple players on the West Region team.
A total of 14 players from the PacWest were named to the West Region First and Second Teams. Northwest Nazarne catcher Brittany Genuardi was named the D2CCA West Region Player of the Year while Anna Kasner of Western Washington was the West Region Pitcher of the Year.
