HONOLULU – The Chaminade University women's volleyball team on Wednesday split their two matches against the University of San Francisco and Hawai'i Pacific University at Queen's Beach in Waikiki.
The Silverswords lost their first match of the day, 4-1, to San Francisco but rebounded for a 4-1 win over HPU to finish their day.
The 'Swords are 3-6 on the season.
Match 1: USF 4, CUH 1
Chaminade put up one of its most all-around competitive matches against an established Division I team this season with several scores going into the high teens.
The 'Swords' lone win came in the fifth spot with
Kanoelehua Misipeka (Pago Pago, American Samoa/Liberty North, Mo.) and
Kendall Rios (Tustin, Calif./Foothill) defeating Francesca Stanschus and Lucy Speier, 21-19 and 21-18.
Leilani Ama (Spokane, Wash./Mt. Spokane) and
Grace Talpash (Temecula, Calif./University of Oklahoma/Great Oak HS) at Flight 1 battled the Dons' duo of McKenna Towne and Kaydence Stormes, falling 21-17 then went to extra points before succumbing, 23-21, which proved to be the clinching match for USF.
Match 2: CUH 4, HPU 1
The Silverswords rolled to convincing wins from their No. 1 team of
Letizia Cammillucci (Padova, Italy/San Jose State/Liceo Amedeo di Savoia Duca D'asosta HS) and
Anna Stucchi (Roncello, Italy/Santa Clara University/I.I.S. Ezio Vanoni HS) and No. 2 squad of Ama and Talpash.
Chaminade clinched the match with their third duo of
Nanna Inoue (Kula, Maui, Hawai'i/Tyler JC/King Kekaulike HS) and
Mahala Ka'apuni (Hilo, Hawai'i/Alaska Anchorage/Hilo HS) who downed the Sharks' (0-5) Lindsey Tapp and Riley Komo, 21-14 and 21-9.
The 'Swords' fourth win came at Flight 5 with
Sina Bauer (Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany/Maximillian-von-Montgelas Gymnasium Vilsbiburg) and
Brooklyn Poling (Gilbert, Ariz./Western Carolina Univ./Perry HS).
The win snapped Chaminade's six-match losing streak, all of which came to Division I level opponents.
The Silverswords will have another doubleheader on Thursday, starting with HPU (0-5) at 8:45 a.m. followed by the University of Nebraska at 10:25 a.m. Both matches will be at Hunakai Park.
